1983 Pontiac Trans Am Daytona 500 25th Anniv. Special Edition
LOT: 280
Estimate:
$20,000-$30,000 US
Chassis No. 1G2AW87S1DN210791
Offered Without Reserve
AUCTION RESULTS: Lot was Sold at a price of $26,400
Specifications:
150bhp, 305 cu. in. overhead valve V8 engine, Rochester Quadrajet carburetor, automatic transmission, independent front suspension and live rear axle, front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 101"
Pontiac has a long history of issuing special edition Firebirds to commemorate various anniversaries and events, particularly Trans Ams. These started in 1976, with Pontiac’s 50th anniversary, and were repeated for anniversaries of the Trans Am’s 1969 introduction. Charlie Harris, the Clearwater, Florida, dealer, predicted that these would become collectible, and began squirreling away new examples from his showroom.
In 1983, Pontiac was selected to pace the Daytona 500. A Trans Am was built up for the purpose, and 500 special edition replicas prepared for sale. These were equipped either with an LU5 fuel-injected 305 cubic inch V8 with automatic transmission or with the LG4 carbureted 305 and five-speed manual transmission. A full ground effect skirt package was added to the body and special plastic grille inserts installed in the front bumper air intakes.
The interior was fitted with Recaro seats in a leather-and-suede combination, other leather appointments on the trim and red gauge lighting. Exterior paint was a unique white over charcoal combination, and special 25th Anniversary emblems were fitted to the front fenders.
This car was taken from Harris’s inventory with less than 30 miles on the odometer and placed in storage. John McMullen acquired the car, and several others, when he purchased the Harris dealership in the early 1990s. The paint looks factory original in quality and texture and appears free of any obvious imperfections or defects. The front and rear bumpers vary slightly in color from the main body of the car, but this is typical of cars of this era. The dashboard and interior appear factory fresh. The rear hatch area looks as new, as does the engine compartment, although the struts holding the hood are weak and may require replacement.
The car is equipped with the LG4 engine and an automatic transmission. It is virtually a new car, looking as if it just left the showroom – because it did. It represents a rare opportunity to acquire an unspoiled special edition car with virtually no mileage. It will give a new owner every satisfaction on the concours circuit or on the road.
