I have about an inch to inch and a half of steering slop when I turn the wheel. From dead center I can move it up to an inch and a half in either direction and the wheels wont budge. Is it time for a new steering box?

Check the front steering linkage first for any slop. The idler arm is a commonly worn out item on GM steering setups. If the slop is in the steering box it can be readjusted. The directions are in the service manual.

Like Dens said, first check the steering components, they do wear out.
You can adjust the steering box by turning the hex head bolt on the top of it.
