I have a neat bolt on tech item I'd like to share. While doing some suspention upgrades to my 83, I found that the 93-97 F-body rear disc brakes are a direct bolt on to our stock 10 bolt rear axle flange. I got mine off of a 97 V-6 Camaro and the caliper mounting brackets have the same bolt holes as our cars axle flange. I even reused the 97 hard brakelines and just threaded them into my 1983 block at the joint of where the flex line spans the area between the axle and the chassis. The only thing that is needed, new, is the 91-91 PBR parking brake cables. I also plan on doing this upgrade to my sons DT500. The reason I call out the factory 4 wheel disc owners, is that the original proportioning valve is retained. You rear drum guys will have to change that to have the correct balance, front to rear. The Factory 15x7 aluminium wheels even fit over the larger brakes. Some refer to them measuring 12", but the are slightly less then that, maybe closer to 11.5" The factory 15x7 Rally II wheels do NOT fit, as the welds hit the caliper. Wow Leon, that is awsome! Have you encountered any trouble running the 4th gen rear brakes? It seems that every time i do my brakes i need to either rebuild or replace my stock calipers. (I just put two new ones on about a year ago...the stock rear disk brakes just stink, haha!) I'll keep this in mind for next time. Thanks!

(I just put two new ones on about a year ago...the stock rear disk brakes just stink, haha!) I'll keep this in mind for next time. Thanks! No problems, Dan, the parking brake actually works now too, and as you can see by the date on the pictures, it's been almost 3 years since I did the swap, and I'm still using the same J/Y calipers (only polished now) and same brake pads that came off the 97 Camaro. Are you having problems with your 4th gens rear brakes, or the brakes on you 84? What kind of problems are you seeing with the PBRs? Leon

Well I think I encounter more trouble with mine because it is driven daily in all sorts of weather. It seems that every time I do my brakes my rear calipers need to be replaced. My E-brake cable has been replaced plenty of times too, the plastic covering cracks, the cable rusts and seizes up, the back calipers no longer get adjusted...and they seize up too. The caliper piston boots fall apart, the bolts and bushings wear out, etc... And of course I lube and paint everything before it goes on...

TA Dan, are you sure you have PBR calipers on your '84? The stock rear disc calipers from '79-88 were GM Delco-Moraine units and are very problematic just like what you are experiencing. In 1989 the rear calipers were upgraded to the PBR setup and they are normally considered very reliable.

Dens, you are probably correct. I had *thought* my stockers were PBR's, but I must be wrong. I've editied my previous post to avoid any further confusion. Thanks for pointing that out.
